Gelvenor Textiles (Pty) Ltd was established in 1965 as a weaver and dyer of
continuous filament lining fabrics. In 1967 the company started producing
nylon fabrics for the manufacture of parachutes and other military fabrics,
mainly for the Defence Force. Textured polyester weaving started in 1968 and
by 1970 Gelvenor were producing a wide range of industrial base fabrics for
PVC coating, woven from high tenacity Polyester yarn. The late 1980's and
early 1990's saw the transformation of the business away from commodity
products to concentrate on fabric engineering and designing fabrics for
specific niché market applications. During this period fabrics were
developed mainly for the following markets: Corporate and schoolwear markets
Filtration industry Scrims, fabric re-inforcing and geotechnical
applications Personal protection applications such as soft body armour and
fire resistance Medical and cleanroom fabrics Military fabrics Sport and
Leisurewear applications In July 1998 the Anglovaal Group sold Avtex, of
which Gelvenor was a division, to Da Gama Textiles. This effectively means
Gelvenor is now part of the KAP Textile Group owned by Mr Claas Daun.

are produced from only the finest yarns. Gelvenor sources its yarns from the
four corners of the globe, each specifically suited to the end use for which
it is intended. The raw yarn is received and stored in our yarn warehouse.
The warehouse itself has a capacity to store over 300 tons of raw yarn.
Walking through our store, it is not uncommon to see a range of fibre types,
including polyester, nylon, viscose, acetate, polypropylene, aramids, carbon
and various blends. All products are bar coded and both receipts and issues
to and from the store are automated via scanning system. Gelvenor has
invested in computer controlled Karl Mayer warping equipment. Our
capabilities include sectional and direct warping affording us the
flexibility we require to meet diverse market needs. Great care is taken
during warping to prevent tension variations and yarn damage, and the new
equipment provides for online monitoring of yarn performance with regard to
filamentation, slubs and continuous yarn defects. Included in our Karl Meyer
machinery is a Rot-o-matic sample warper allowing us to make up sample warps
of 70 to 100 metres. This affords Gelvenor flexibility for its process of
continual development and re-development of the range. Due to the highly
diverse product range Gelvenor has both single end and slasher sizing
machinery. These allow the application of a range of sizes to a variety of
yarns, including our fine filament parachute type yarns, textured yarns
found in the apparel range and spun yarns used in the household textile
range. At Gelvenor, we know that meticulous preparation will lead to fine
quality finished fabric and so we continually monitor and assess the
incoming sizes, application conditions and sized yarns for trends and
variations. Air jet, projectile, flexible and rigid rapier looms make up
Gelvenors compliment of fabric forming machines. With such machinery, yarns
as light as 30 decitex (10 000m of the yarn weighs a mere 30 grams), upto
yarns as heavy as 3300 decitex (10,000m of the yarn weighs 3,3Kg) can be
woven. One only needs to peruse the Gelvenor product range to appreciate the
versatility of our weaving department. With housekeeping being a major
concern, one could be excused for thinking our weaving shed was a food
factory as cleanliness is one of our top priorities. Reeds, heald wires and
air jet nozzles are all meticulously cleaned using ultra-sonic cleaning
technology. As Gelvenor engineer products which are "fit for purpose", it
sometimes becomes necessary to re-engineer the constituent yarns. Often,
Gelvenor will twist or double yarns to be used in products where specific
performance requirements need to be met. Apart from being able to produce
speciality twisted yarns, with "in house" up-twisting, Gelvenor has the
advantage of complete twist level and quality control. Using an elaborate
racking system with computerised location and tracking, we are able store
upto 3 million linear metres of greige fabric. At this stage, industrial
type fabrics are routed for despatch while fabrics requiring wet processing
are stored until requisitionedThe wet process facilities include a
continuous scouring range, jigs, and jets, cold and hot padding facilities
and a beam dyer. This range of wet processing equipment allows us great
versatility in utilising different process routes. Apart from the production
capabilities, much time is spent on wastewater minimisation and effluent
control. The implementation of the Barco electronic control system has
allowed us even greater control of our machine operation and product
quality. Gelvenor is well equipped to do a range of chemical and physical
finishes to enhance hand and performance. These range from protective type
chemical finishes to handle finishes, including emerising, raising,
chintzing and fabric back coating. At Gelvenor Textiles we engineer finishes
to fit the intended end use - talk to us and see what we can do for you.
Gelvenor Textiles inspection department is presently optimising their EVS
automatic fabric inspection system. The system is capable of inspecting
fabric at speeds of upto 70 metres per minute. Every fault is recorded and a
bitmap image is displayed of the fault. The end result is a "map" of the
location and nature of each fault. The machine is also able to analyse the
shade of the batch from side to side and end to end using an inline Shade
Variation Analyser (SVA). Each roll is ticketed and for your convenience
care instructions are included on each ticket. These can be passed onto your
customer. Dispatch Every roll that enters or leaves our dispatch passes
through our scanning system. Effectively the whole system is electronic
allowing us a comprehensive overview of fabric movement. Each roll to be
dispatched is checked for certification where required and hen packed to
avoid transportation damage.
